Karen Cattel is a special artist and her whimsical art looks great on the two sturdy totes I purchased. One is a gift for a friend and the other is for me. I love them.
One of a series of paintings by French social realist Julien Dupre (French, 1851-1910), focused on (apparently) the same female farm worker and coworkers gathering hay, painted circa 1890. Although never quite in the same league as compatriot social realists Courbet and Millet, there's an energy about Dupre's painting, along with subtle play of light - as with this one, with the sun low on the horizon - and dramatic use of cloud formations to echo the action on the ground, that gives his work an elegiac, and highly collectable, edge (this painting fetched almost $200,000 when sold at auction recently).
